Saving the Ormond Hotel Facade - Sign the Petition Stop the Demolition

Who are the Friends of Gems Joyce? What is the aim of this blog?
Saving the Ormond Hotel Facade a priceless gem in the crown of Joycean Dublin.

Well if you were to think of the buildings that Joyce wrote about as gems in a kind of Joycean crown of Dublin.
Then we are the Friends of Gems Joyce.

The Friends of Gems Joyce are a group of people from all walks of life, Dubliners and men and women from all over Ireland and from all around the world who care about James Joyce and his literary legacy and the wonderful cultural richness that is embodied in the very fabric of the city itself through this association and we wish to help preserve and promote it for now and future generations to enjoy.

Dublin, it's people and its buildings served as Joyce's most constant muse. Joyce's Dublin is as important to his writings as London is to Charles Dickens.  Joyce's wonderful prose is wrapped up in the very bricks and mortar of the buildings he set his often closely biographical fiction in.  These structures stand as monuments to a great intellectual endeavour, they are a reminder to us and a connection to his genius and are an intrinsic part of why Dublin is a UNESCO city of literature. We should be very proud of it!

However, bit by bit Joycean Dublin is being destroyed and bit by bit Dublin as a whole is diminished. There are currently plans submitted to Dublin City Council, under the recent owners Monteco Holdings, to demolish the entire Ormond Hotel site including the still standing original 1900's Ormond Hotel Facade which Joyce wrote about in Ulysses. In fact he set almost the entire Sirens episode in the Ormond Hotel, a pivotal section of the book.
Sadly the facade is the only part of the original hotel still standing but it is still a significant structure. It is the very embodiment of one of the most beautiful chapters in Ulysses but once it's gone it's irreplaceable.

We want to Save the Ormond Hotel Facade and have it preserved and protected as a major cultural landmark for now and future generations. We see it as an important gem in the Joycean crown of Dublin.
